Why the quality of tiling matters

Bathroom tiling looks deceptively straightforward. The difference between a good tiling job and a poor one is immediately visible — tiles not centred on the wall, uneven grout lines, cracked tiles caused by movement in the substrate. Getting it right requires careful preparation, precise layout planning and experience with the right materials for wet environments.

John has been tiling bathrooms across Stirling and Dunblane since 2008 and is City & Guilds qualified. Every job is measured and planned before a single tile is fixed. He works with ceramic, porcelain and metro tiles and will advise on quantities, adhesive type and layout before the job begins.

Small spaces tiled carefully, with precise cuts around pipes, fittings and sockets. No less care than a full bathroom.

Kitchen Splashbacks

Metro tile splashbacks and kitchen wall tiling behind hobs and sinks — a quick, practical upgrade that transforms a kitchen.

How John approaches a tiling job

1
Survey and layout — John measures the wall and plans the tile layout to ensure a balanced, centred finish with no awkward small cuts at eye level or in prominent positions
2
Surface preparation — Walls checked for level and sound. Any old tiles removed if required. Surfaces sealed or boarded where needed before tiling begins
3
Tile fixing — Tiles set with the appropriate adhesive for the surface type. Cut tiles measured and cut precisely — a wet saw gives a much cleaner edge than a manual tile cutter
4
Grouting — Fresh grout applied throughout and finished to a clean, even joint. Colour-matched to your tiles where possible
5
Silicone sealing — Where tiles meet the bath, shower tray or worktop, a proper silicone bead applied for a watertight finish

Not sure how many tiles you need? John can advise on quantities and help you avoid over- or under-ordering. Always buy at least 10% extra for cuts and breakages.

Existing tiles but tired grout?

If your tiles are in good condition but the grout is stained, cracked or mouldy, there's no need to retile. John's regrouting service refreshes the grout and silicone for a fraction of the cost. Not sure which you need? See the guide.

Bathroom tiling — common questions

Do I supply the tiles or does John?+
Most customers supply their own tiles — John supplies adhesive, grout, silicone and all fixings. If you're not sure what to order, send John the room measurements and he'll tell you how many tiles and what adhesive type you need before you order. Always buy at least 10% extra to allow for cuts and breakages.
How long does bathroom tiling take?+
A shower enclosure or small WC can often be done in a half day. A full bathroom — walls around the bath and shower — typically takes one to two days depending on the size and tile format. Large-format porcelain tiles take longer to handle and cut than standard ceramic tiles.
Can you tile around an existing bath or shower?+
Yes — John regularly tiles around existing fittings, cutting neatly around bath edges, shower trays, pipes and fittings. The bath or shower will need to stay off for at least 24 hours after the silicone is applied to allow it to cure.
Do you cover Edinburgh as well as Stirling?+
Yes — John covers Stirling, Dunblane, Bridge of Allan, Edinburgh and the wider Stirlingshire area. Call 07877 486 939 to check availability for your location.

Tiles in reasonable condition but the grout is suffering? Read the regrout or retile guide → — it explains when regrouting is the right call and when new tiles are genuinely needed.
