Outside taps fitted across Stirling, Falkirk, Dunblane & Edinburgh
Looking for someone to fit an outside tap at your property? John fits external taps across Stirling, Falkirk, Dunblane and Edinburgh — connecting your garden tap properly to the cold mains, using a tap with an internal double check valve built in so the job complies with UK water regulations. All external pipework is lagged as standard. Typical job takes 2–3 hours from arrival to final pressure test.
Send John a quick WhatsApp photo of where you'd like the tap and he'll give you a fixed price upfront — 07877 486 939.
Gardening & watering
Easy access for hoses, watering cans, sprinklers and drip irrigation — no more dragging hoses through the kitchen window.
Car & bike washing
A dedicated outside tap for washing cars, bikes, caravans and pet bowls — keeps the muck outside the house.
Pressure washers
Direct, reliable water supply for pressure washers cleaning patios, decking, drives and outdoor furniture.
Paddling pools & hot tubs
Filling outdoor pools, hot tubs and water features — far simpler than running hoses from indoors.
Outdoor hot taps
Useful for washing cars or bikes when cold water's uncomfortable in winter, and convenient for rinsing tools or kit. Mention it when you call and John will let you know what's possible at your location.
How John installs an outside tap
- Identify the most convenient cold water pipe to tap into — usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility room, to keep the run short and tidy.
- Drill the hole from inside outwards for a clean exit. Drilling from the outside in is awkward on Scottish stone-rendered walls — the drill bounces on the embedded stones. Going outwards gives more wiggle room as long as the height is set right.
- Fit an internal isolation valve so the supply can be shut off and the external pipe drained down before winter.
- Run the pipework out through the wall using a hose-union fitting sized to the wall depth, plus exterior silicone and three screws to close the gap. This handles the variable wall thicknesses and any blow-out on the outside face.
- Fit the double check valve — required to prevent backflow into the mains supply (UK Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations). John usually uses a tap with the double check valve built in.
- Mount the external tap with a sturdy backplate, sealed against the wall.
- Pressure test the run and check every joint for leaks.
- Seal external wall penetrations to keep water out and heat in.
A straightforward installation typically takes 2–3 hours. Drilling the hole is the slowest part — it takes real strength and there's no reliable way to scan that deep for hidden mains pipes, cables or studwork nails, so it has to be done carefully. Awkward access or longer pipe runs may take longer — John will give an exact time when quoting.
Compliant with UK water regulations
Outside taps in the UK must include a double check valve to prevent any backflow into the mains drinking water supply. This is required under the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations — protecting against contamination from a hose left in a bucket, water butt, or similar.
John fits the double check valve as standard on every external tap installation. Pipework is properly supported and protected, and an internal isolation valve is installed so the external section can be drained down before winter — important in Scottish climates where freezing is a real risk.
Frost protection — important in Scotland
Scottish winters can freeze outdoor pipes — a burst behind a wall does serious damage. John's standard approach:
- All external pipework lagged as part of the installation — no upsell, no optional add-on.
- Internal isolation valve fitted as standard so the outside run can be shut off and drained before the first hard frost.
- A weather-resistant tap cover for the cold months. John can supply a decent one as part of the job — worth avoiding the cheap supermarket versions, which fall apart in a season. Or pick one up yourself from any DIY shop if you'd rather.
- When temperatures are forecast to drop below −5 °C, shut off, drain the external section, lag the pipework and fit an insulated cap over the tap.
Types of external tap John fits
Which one John fits comes down to your wall, exposure and how you'll use the tap.
Standard bib tap
The most common style for general garden and outdoor use. Brass construction, weather-resistant.
Tap with built-in double check valve
Backflow prevention built into the tap body itself. John's default choice.
Frost-protected tap
Designed so water drains away from the exposed section when switched off. Less common in UK domestic but available on request if you'd like one.
Lockable tap
Useful for commercial premises, schools, rental properties or shared driveways where you'd rather not have anyone helping themselves to the supply.
Outdoor hot tap
Possible where there's a hot-water supply close enough to tap into. Useful for car or bike washing in winter. Discuss when you call.
External tap installation cost
Final cost depends on access, pipe-run length, tap type and any complications (concealed pipes, unusual wall construction). John gives a fixed quote upfront so there are no surprises — call 07877 486 939 with a quick description of the job and he'll give you a price.
All quotes include the tap, double check valve, isolation valve, pipework, fixings and labour. A photo of the proposed location sent via WhatsApp is the fastest way to a fair quote.
If something changes mid-job
Outside tap installs are usually straightforward, but occasionally something unexpected turns up — the pipe run needs re-routing once the wall's open, a hidden fitting is corroded, or what looked like a quick job hides additional work. When that happens, John stops, shows you what's there (often with photos), and agrees any change to the price before the extra work goes ahead. No surprise invoices at the end. Every job finishes with a written report and photos so you can see exactly where the money went.
If you'd rather get an in-person quote before committing to a price — especially for anything beyond a straightforward bib tap fit — that's also available. Sometimes seeing the job in person is the fairest way to price it.
Hose attachments or splitters at the tap head are optional and ideally arranged by the customer — John can fit one if you've got it, but they're not part of the standard install.

Common questions
How long does an outside tap installation take?
A typical install takes 2–3 hours from arrival to final pressure test. Awkward access or longer pipe runs can take longer — John gives an exact time when quoting.
Can you fit one through a stone or rendered wall?
Yes. John drills from the inside outwards — Scottish stone-rendered walls cause drill bits to bounce on the embedded stones, so going from inside gives more control and a cleaner exit.
Do you supply the tap, or do I need to buy one?
The tap is included in John's quote, alongside the double check valve, isolation valve, pipework, fixings and labour. If you've got a specific tap in mind, mention it when you call.
Will it freeze in winter?
External pipework is lagged as standard, and the internal isolation valve means you can shut off and drain the outside section before a hard frost. A decent tap cover handles the cold months — John can supply one as part of the job, or you can pick one up from any DIY shop (avoid the cheap supermarket versions, they don't last a season).
Can you fit an outdoor hot tap?
Yes, where there's hot-water access close enough to tap into. Less common than cold but useful for car or bike washing in winter and rinsing tools or pet bowls. Mention it when you call and John will let you know what's possible at your location.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes — a 12-month workmanship guarantee on every external tap install. That covers defects in the installation itself: a leaking joint, a tap that wasn't sealed properly, lagging that's come apart. Any of that, John comes back and puts it right at no charge. It doesn't cover damage caused by other trades on site after the install, frost damage to pipes that weren't drained before a hard winter, or normal wear over years of use. Photos are taken before and after each job so it's clear what was the state of things when John finished.
What if the job ends up bigger than the quote?
Outside tap installs usually go to plan. When something unexpected does come up — a corroded fitting, a hidden pipe route, an issue once the wall's open — John stops, shows you what's there (often with photos), and agrees the price change before any extra work happens. No invoice at the end with surprise extras on it. Every job finishes with a written report and photos so you can see exactly what was done. If you'd rather get an in-person quote before committing, that's available — just ask.
Compliant installation
Double check valve fitted as standard, internal isolation valve so you can drain before winter, and all pipework lagged. Compliant with UK Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations.
